Between the Alaska Range Mountains in the south and the Brooks Range Mountains in the north, scores of wildfires were burning in east-central Alaska on June 30, 2005. Nearly all of the blazes were triggered by lightning. In this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from NASA’s Aqua satellite, the Yukon River Flats are barely visible beneath the cover of smoke that dominates the top and right of the image. To the south, Fairbanks is visible as a tan-colored spot on the north bank of the Delta River. Locations where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. Sensor: Aqua/MODIS.
